Medical There are many different ways that pregnant women who use substances or alcohol may be treated during their prenatal care, and different approaches to intervening during pregnancy. What are common approaches to providing medical care for pregnant women who use substances or alcohol? Are these approaches influenced by stigma against alcohol or substance use during pregnancy?
The 3rd of the 8-session series is related to the medical segment. There are 2 talks, 1 from Dr. Kim McKay in which she will be sharing her OB expertise and Troy Thompson, a physician assistant will be sharing his expertise form the work he does at Project Recovery.

Legal Illicit substance use and alcohol and substance use during pregnancy are both criminal offenses in South Dakota. How does justice involvement impact experienced stigma and maternal child welfare, and how might this contribute to more stigma? Do race or class play a role?
The 2nd session is two justice talk with two speakers. The first speaker is Jean Cline, an attorney in Rapid City and the 2nd speaker is Natalie Means, an advocate in civic engagement and civil rights.

Dr. Arielle Deutsch will be the opening speaker for an 8 session lecture series addressing practices and policies for alcohol/substance use in pregnancy to reduce stigma in order to improve maternal health
Epidemiology -Although we know that using alcohol or substances during pregnancy can have negative health consequences, there is still a lot of confusion around “how much” – how much do pregnant women in South Dakota use alcohol or substances, and “how much” does this have an effect on mother and child health? What does this mean for the way that communities may stigmatize women who use substances or alcohol during pregnancy?
